Other Gesneriads
The gesneriads below are "cousins" to African violets.
Episcias, sometimes called flame or peacock violets, native from Southern Mexico to Brazil, are remarkable for their stunning foliage, always eye-catching even when not in bloom. Brilliantly colored blossoms are abundantly produced, and the stolons root readily wherever they touch the soil. Grown similarly to African violets, Episcias can tolerate higher humidity, and bloom best with brighter light.
Chiritas, native from the Himalayas to Southeast Asia, are cool-growing plants, preferring 55°-75°F temperatures. Some have spectacular foliage, and all have tubular blooms strikingly marked. Bright light produces better growth and bloom.
Streptocarpus, primarily found in southern Africa and Madagascar, are heavily flowering plants with long, strap-like leaves. Trumpet-shaped blossoms may be single or double, and vary in color and pattern dramatically. Culture is similar to violets, but 55°-75°F temperatures are preferred.
